Using the Word to Encourage Others

Give God Glory

Finally hit 10 consecutive miles. Now, I don’t think everything happens for a reason but I do think that everything that happens God wants and will get the Glory from. Maybe not now or in ways we will understand but eventually he will be glorified.

Today marks being smoke free for 2 months and 14 days. I started smoking when I was out of high school. This past summer I kept thinking about quitting and tried a few times unsuccessfully. I kept hearing God speak to me about idols. Exodus 20:3-5a “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:…”

This isn’t just referring to a golden calf or some other idol you pray to but what YOU are spending time with and are not willing to give up to serve Jesus or that distracts you from focusing on God. Then I realized instead of going to God when I was stressed or needing encouragement I went to cigarettes. Those were my “idols”. I could have been talking to God but instead my first thought was needing to go outside and have a moment alone. I immediately decided to quit…again. I prayed to God to take my craving away and to give me strength to quit. I decided to start running. My cravings completely vanished and I have NO desire to smoke at all. I do not crave it. There is nothing about it I like. I feel like I could run and run and run and not stop. How could this be possible with all the damage I have probably done to my lungs? Thankfully I have no trouble breathing in any way. I don’t know the damage done to the inside of my body but I have faith God will take care of me. I say all of this for a few reasons. One, to give God the glory. Because I know I could not have done it without Him. Two, if you are struggling with quitting a bad habit. Give it to God and ask him to guide you. If I can do it then you can too. “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.” Psalm 37:5.
*This is only the second time I’ve ever featured another person’s writing through Leaving a Legacy. I have been able to witness firsthand God’s moving upon her life. I had to share the glory being given to God! Thank you Sarah Dunkerson for living your life for Jesus and for shining his light so brightly into my life and the lives of many others. Love you!!!

On the Lookout

I’ve recently become a runner. (Aka really slow jogger.) I’ve chosen to use this time to pray, to try to draw closer to the Lord.
The other day he led me to pray along the lines of “show me your presence in my life”.
This morning in my bible time he gave me this scripture: “Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.”

I Chronicles 16:11
Here is what I took from that: the Lord is present throughout all of my life. I just have to put forth effort to look for him.
Now I’ve known that the Lord is with me. But to be reminded to be on the lookout for the love that he wants to pour out on me daily is a blessing in itself. There is always something to show his presence.
Today when I went to the mailbox and received a note of encouragement from a friend of mine encouraging me in the ministry I was ecstatic. Within the card was a piece of scripture that the Lord has spoken to me over and over. I just stand in awe of the Lord and his want to walk closely with his children!
Our days would go so much better if we are in the frame of mind to be looking for the Lord. I challenge you to try it out. You won’t be disappointed.
