Using the Word to Encourage Others

Give God Glory

Finally hit 10 consecutive miles. Now, I don’t think everything happens for a reason but I do think that everything that happens God wants and will get the Glory from. Maybe not now or in ways we will understand but eventually he will be glorified.

Today marks being smoke free for 2 months and 14 days. I started smoking when I was out of high school. This past summer I kept thinking about quitting and tried a few times unsuccessfully. I kept hearing God speak to me about idols. Exodus 20:3-5a “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:…”

This isn’t just referring to a golden calf or some other idol you pray to but what YOU are spending time with and are not willing to give up to serve Jesus or that distracts you from focusing on God. Then I realized instead of going to God when I was stressed or needing encouragement I went to cigarettes. Those were my “idols”. I could have been talking to God but instead my first thought was needing to go outside and have a moment alone. I immediately decided to quit…again. I prayed to God to take my craving away and to give me strength to quit. I decided to start running. My cravings completely vanished and I have NO desire to smoke at all. I do not crave it. There is nothing about it I like. I feel like I could run and run and run and not stop. How could this be possible with all the damage I have probably done to my lungs? Thankfully I have no trouble breathing in any way. I don’t know the damage done to the inside of my body but I have faith God will take care of me. I say all of this for a few reasons. One, to give God the glory. Because I know I could not have done it without Him. Two, if you are struggling with quitting a bad habit. Give it to God and ask him to guide you. If I can do it then you can too. “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.” Psalm 37:5.
*This is only the second time I’ve ever featured another person’s writing through Leaving a Legacy. I have been able to witness firsthand God’s moving upon her life. I had to share the glory being given to God! Thank you Sarah Dunkerson for living your life for Jesus and for shining his light so brightly into my life and the lives of many others. Love you!!!

Choosing Sides

Luke 14:26

I Kings 15:11-13

Asa removed the idols that the previous kings had made. He removed the queen from her throne because she too had created an idol to worship. Then he destroyed her idol.

The previous king was his father. The queen he denounced was his mother.

Asa’s decision was to do right in the eyes of The Lord. Even when this meant going against his mother and father.

Sometimes in our walk with Christ we have to choose who we are going to side with. At times the decision can be easy but when we have to take a stand contrary to the people that mean the most to us it can be very difficult.

But I encourage you to side with Jesus no matter who is going against you.

Choose Life

Psalm 135:15-18

Exodus 32:1-6

In Moses’ absence Aaron fashioned a golden calf for the Israelites to worship. He told them that this would be the god that they would serve.

The thought is mind boggling. People were actually praying to this statue. It couldn’t see. It couldn’t hear. It wasn’t living! How ridiculous it seems.

None of this is living either. Still yet some people choose to serve it. They become obsessed with it. Dedicating their lives to it.

To some people this type of material has become their idol.

But be glad because you have chosen a God that is alive. The God that lives and reigns forever more. He hears our prayers. He looks upon us as though we are the apple of his eye. He speaks to us. He is alive and well. He has always been and always will be. He is the great I Am.

Serving lifeless idols will get you nowhere. Serving the One True God will afford you life most abundant with an eternity spent with Him.
