Using the Word to Encourage Others

Prisoner to Royalty

Jehoiachin, the King of Judah was put into the pit of a Babylonian prison. For four years he lived in captivity. Jehoiachin ate the same as the others. He wore the same prisoner garb. He was treated as if he weren’t a former king.

Then he found favor with the new Babylonian King. Jehoiachin was promoted from the bonds that he was under. He was given a new change of clothes. He was seated at the King’s table for the rest of his life. Again he became royalty.

Isn’t that a beautiful picture? Someone taken from captivity and given a new life to live as royalty. It’s the picture of us.

Regardless of what our earthly title or occupation we were all at one time bound by the chains of sin standing in need of redemption. Then Jesus came and called us out. He changed us. He made us royalty; heirs to His throne. And from now to eternity we can feast daily on the Bread of Life and drink of the Living Water.

Jeremiah 52:31-34

Helpful People

Joseph departed from Hebron and headed to Shechem. He was going to check on his brothers and the family’s livestock. At Shechem he met a man wandering in the field, but not his family. The man told Joseph that his brethren and their livestock were in Dothan. Joseph continued his travels and met up with his family in Dothan, in accordance to the guidance of the stranger.

How interesting that God put a random person in Joseph’s life to help guide him! Some people in your life have been strategically placed by God to encourage you, to keep you accountable, or to be part of your everyday walk. Don’t take those people for granted. Be willing to hear, wisely discern and learn from them.

Genesis 37:12-17

The Mighty Minority

II Chronicles 29: 3-36

King Hezekiah called upon the Levites to clean up the house of The Lord, a large endeavor. But the size of the job didn’t deter them. They came willingly and accomplished their goal. They worked together to make sure that God was honored and that He was glorified in spite of the few in number.

Maybe you’re part of the minority in your workplace and you doubt that there is anyway that you’re light is shining bright into the darkness around you. Maybe you look at your church attendance and think that there isn’t enough people to really make a difference in the community you serve. Instead of focusing on the people you don’t see around you focus on the ones that you do. People, no matter how few or how many, that are willing to serve The Lord together can accomplish mighty things in Jesus’ name. Don’t limit God to a number. Work with who He has given you. He’ll bless your efforts.

What’s Your Response?

Moses told the people that the Levites were going to give the consequences of the law if broken. He also told them that they were to give a response: “…and all the people shall answer and say amen.”

Having the people respond accomplished two things:

1) it caused them to pay attention to what was being said.

2) it took away the opportunity to say that they were ignorant to the law.

God is looking for us to respond to His Word. He is looking for us to put effort into listening to what He has to say. He wants us to focus on Him so that we won’t naively be led astray. He wants a response of “amen”….”I’ll do it, Lord”….”I accept and will abide by your Word.”

What kind of response do you give Him? Is it one of affirmation or is it nonchalant and uncaring? Choose to respond in a way that will draw you closer to Jesus and bring glory to God.

Deuteronomy 27:14-15

Look Around

Bulrushes, slime and pitch. Those aren’t the components you would think would be needed to make a life saving device. But those are the exact things that were available to Moses’ mother. She was able to use those materials to make the ark that baby Moses floated in down the river to safety.

Sometimes we get bogged down thinking “if only I had this then I would be better off”. Look at what you do have. If God has called you to it then He’s provided you with the necessary resources you need to get going.

You may have to get creative like Moses’ momma did. You’ll definitely have to trust that Jesus can bless it. But by having the desire to succeed, the willingness to work for it and trust in God you will be successful. So stop wishful thinking, take what The Lord has given you and get to work.

Exodus 2:1-10

Popularity

Jehoshaphat set up rulers to judge throughout all of Judah. His advice: judge not for man, but for The Lord because He is with you. Fear Him alone with a perfect heart.

Just as this was difficult for these rulers it can be hard for us today. But just as sure as The Lord was with the rulers of old He is with us too. Abide by the rulings based on the teachings of the Bible, not the popular view of man.

II Chronicles 19:4-9

Traveling Guide

Saul had been struck blind on the road to Damascus. He would’ve been left to wander, not knowing which way to turn or which way to go had it not been for the people traveling with him. They took him by the hand and led him to the city. They were his guides.

It is our job as Christians, the ones that can see, to lead the spiritually blinded to Christ. We are responsible for showing others the pathway to Jesus. Without our guidance they’ll be lost.

Acts 9:1-8

Reassurance

The Philistines were warring against Keilah. David went to The Lord asking if he should lead his people into battle against the Philistines. The Lord said “Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

David rallied the troops. He told them the plan of action. They were hesitant. They were doubtful that The Lord would ask this of them.

So David enquired of The Lord yet again. And again he received the same instruction. David went back to the men, confident that he had heard the Lord correctly. He and his men fought the Philistines and saved Keilah.

Sometimes we want reassurance that God is guiding us and that we’re not getting off the path He has laid out. Ask Him to reassure you in those times. Because even when it seems like the whole world is going in a different direction knowing that God is with you gives you the courage to keep traveling down the road He has put you on.
