“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” I Corinthians 13:1
Doing nice things with the wrong intentions is a distraction to yourself and to those around you. It takes the focus off of Jesus and places it on your works.
Ask yourself: Am I doing this to make myself feel better, to check off a list, or to please other people? Pray about your answer and your intentions because they matter. Only what is done for Christ, in love, will last. He wants to give you lasting purpose and is willing to provide righteousness for anyone that seeks after him.

in context here paul is speaking about the importance of having love, without love you are basically useless and plain. and those without love do not have God. (1 john 4:16) so the point here is emphasizing the importance of love and doing things out of love – Christ gave us all new hearts after repentance , so we can live from the heart again, meaning love from our hearts is love from Christ, so doing things out of love is actually Christ working in us and through us – we naturally express Christ as branches on a tree, (vine) we bear what the vine produces – not what the branch produces , it cant produce fruit by itself. and one the fruit of the spirit is LOVE.
